What is happening with the Film Score world? I want an Orchestral Masterpiece for Spider-Man, something that James Horner achieved with the first film, now we have a band Scoring it. Zimmer has created brilliance in his career, but this just seems like it’s getting way out of hand

and everything has to be the same? you get your same bland orchestral score for 99 percent of movies out there in hollywood. this is what keeps things new and fresh.t its exciting seeing musicians trying to approach scoring from a different angle.

and the fact you called Horner’s score for TASM a masterpiece is hilarious by the way

      • some guy says:

So you’re criticizing somebody because they prefer James Horner’s orchestral approach instead of Hans Zimmer’s? Get lost.
“and everything has to be the same?” you say? You’re complaining about scores that all sound the same and yet you praise Hans Zimmer who does the same thing over and over and over again.
You’re also wrong about this: “you get your same bland orchestral score for 99 percent of movies out there in hollywood” Actually, the majority of Hollywood sound like Hans Zimmer. That is what is boring because everyone seems to sound like Zimmer instead of trying something new.
“and the fact you called Horner’s score for TASM a masterpiece is hilarious by the way”: When compared to the kinds of scores we hear in most of today’s Hollywood blockbusters, calling Horner’s score a masterpiece sounds just about right. Open your ears and use your brain. Don’t be dumb. Hans is a very influential composer but his influence is a negative one.

        • Employee says:

I’m praising zimmer because at least he is trying to create something sonically different than what is out there. Quotes from collider is him saying he wants to try new things with Spider-man. But Lee thinks that things should always sound the same from his comment. It is good to have a mixture of everything to keep things fresh. And i hate this idea that zimmer is cloning himself when it’s complete bullshit. Inception is another one of his masterpieces and that was only 3 years ago. Man Of Steel was energetic and The dark knight trilogy is masterful. And yes when you listen to the majority of blockbusters minus the horrible trailers they sound like bland bullshit. Henry Jackman James Howard, Bryan Tyler, michael giacchino and so on create the same sounds again and again.

And no TASM isn’t a masterpiece. it didn’t even get a oscar nom lol. Horner fell off. deal with it

For it is written in the stars.

I find it mildly amusing that you diss James Newton Howard (among others) but you praised the score to the Dark Knight. Do you not realize that JNH helped Zimmer with the scores to the first two Nolan Batman films? You also say that JNH, along with Giacchino, Jackman, and Brian Tyler create the same sound. Are you insane? JNH is one of the most versatile composers out there. Every score he does I can tell apart. You dissed Giacchino who gets better and better with each score. His John Carter, Super 8, Up (which he won the Academy for) and both J.J. Abrams Star Treks were beyond excellent. Jackman and Tyler are impressive composers in their own right. I love Zimmer to death and agree about his scores to Inception and MOS but you are blind to the fact that his sound is often mimicked. James Horner’s score to ASM WAS a masterpiece and one of his best scores in recent years but because it didn’t have that Inception-style BUUH BUUUUUUUUUH sound it wasn’t? Whatever, dude.

          • some guy says:

Different isn’t always good. Just Remember that. And also, Giacchino? Seriously, Giacchino is one of the few composers who score action that sounds very different from what we hear everyone else do. Have you even listened to Giacchino’s scores? Even Brian Tyler’s execution of this ‘modern’ scoring style is brilliant.
You say ‘The Amazing Spider-Man” is not a masterpiece because it didn’t get an Oscar nomination? There can only be 5 nominees a year, you idiot.
Horner fell off? Firstly, he didn’t. Secondly, this has nothing to do with Horner, the score for the Amazing Spider-Man is awesome. Unlike you, when I listen to a score, I don’t judge the music based on the composer’s name. If the score is good, it’s good. If it’s bad, it’s bad.
You can’t say “And yes when you listen to the majority of blockbusters minus the horrible trailers they sound like bland bullshit.” and still praise Zimmer. This sentence basically describes Zimmer’s recent work anyways. There was no need for you to bash on Horner’s score just because you’re excited about the new one. I’ll even far as saying that Zimmer is a talented composer but I prefer his music for ‘Romantic comedies’ and animated films and also, his score to ‘Sherlock Holmes’ was awesome. Unlike you, I actually acknowledge that Zimmer has something there even if I hate the majority of his output. You, on the other hand, have made it your priority to judge other composers. You can still praise a composer without bashing on others. It is possible. Please, stop your nonsense.

          • Macejko says:

Brian Tyler? You mean that guy who is able to write only one theme per soundtrack and then repeating it until we are sick of it? Yeah, that’s definitely some scoring brilliance right there.
When I first heard about PW’s involvement, it made me mad. But now, with the other guys joining in, I’m more curious. This might get pretty interesting. In Zimmer I trust. He was never in such shape like he is these days. 2013 was probably his best year to date.

          • Lee says:

Lol! Did I just read that right? lol Did you actually say that James Newton Howard and Michael Giacchino create the same stuff every time? haha. wow it’s clear you’re a troll. Howards biggest scores for Sixth Sense, Signs, King Kong, Snow White, Dark Knight, Hunger Games, sounds like 6 different Composers. And Giacchino’s Super 8, UP, John Carter, Star Trek, Ratatouille sound absolutely nothing alike. Whereas Zimmer’s Lion King, Gladiator, Pirates of the Caribbean, His contribution to The Dark Knight, Inception, Sherlock Holmes, ALL sounds exactly the same lol. I love some of Zimmers work, but he is the most repetitive, lazy composer out there, never doing score on his own, always with countless ghost writers and collaborators so he can place the blame on more people than just himself when the music is bland and boring. Educate yourself, or don’t comment at all.

That’s funny. I’m not sick of his IM3 theme because it’s awesome and Tyler made that the best score out of the IM trilogy. His Mandarin theme was chilling and his Thor: The Dark World score sounds pretty badass so far.

          • Tiago says:

James Newton Howard is one of the most versatile composers of Hollywood. He can do dramas, romance, action, adventure, animation, pratically every kind of film. And, about Giacchino, have you heard his scores for Super 8? John Carter? Star Trek Into Darkness? They’re all great scores, and each one has its different sound.

I am a big fan of Zimmer, but, in the last few years, he has doing the same crazyness with a lot of electronics and almost nothing of orchestra. Look at The Lone Ranger: an excellent orchestral score, that sounds like the Zimmer of the good times. If he does for Spider-Man an orchestral score like this, I’ll be very happy, but, unfortunatly, looks like he is doing the same mess with electronics.

And I say more: Horner’s score for Amazing Spider-Man is way better than Zimmer’s Man of Steel.

          • Employee says:

I know James and Hans did TDK lol. without Hans that movie would have sounded bland like all of howards score. and i know this site is filled with composers who like traditional sounds. but give it a rest you pompous douches. diversity is a good thing.

and yes James Horner and Newton still suck!

  2. tiago says:

James Horner’s score is excellent, his theme for Spider-Man is really great. And I prefer a very orchestral heroic and theme than a rock band improvising electronic generic music.

Zimmer has become a parody of himself…
