guardians-of-the-galaxyDirector James Gunn has confirmed on his Facebook page that Tyler Bates will be composing the score for Marvel’s upcoming superhero film Guardians of the Galaxy. The film stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Lee Pace, Michael Rooker, Glenn Close, John C. Reilly, Benicio del Toro, Karen Gillian, Djimon Hounsou, Lee Pace and Dave Bautista. Vin Diesel is also in talks to join the film’s cast. The movie based on the Marvel Comics characters created by Dan Abnett & Andy Lanning follows a U.S pilot who bands with a group of ex-cons from other planets after he’s thrust in the middle of a universal conflict. Gunn is writing and directing the project and Kevin Feige (The AvengersIron Man, ThorThe Incredible Hulk) is producing the movie for Marvel Studios. Bates and Gunn have previously collaborated on numerous projects, including the features Slither and Super, as well as the Beezel segment of Movie 43. Guardians of the Galaxy is set to be released on August 1, 2014 by Walt Disney Pictures.

Bates is also scoring AMC’s original series Low Winter Sun starring Mark Strong. His upcoming feature projects also include Ti West’s The Sacrament, Joe Johnston’s Not Safe for Work and Takashi Shimizu’s 7500.

  1. Miles Blitch says:

Huh. I haven’t really responded to Bates’ recent work, but he is certainly capable of nice music when he tries–certain portions of “Watchmen” can attest to that. Plus, his work on “God of War: Ascension” makes me think that he’s become more comfortable with an orchestra since “Conan”. I don’t doubt that there’ll be some electronics involved, though, given the setting. Fingers crossed!

  2. Adervae says:

    What a terrible choice!!!

  3. JAMO says:

WTF!!!… this is not that good as i hoped, it seems like David Newman will not be scoring great films for a long time…I mean he was a pefects choice.

This will be strange… I mean…even Alan Menken would be a better choice

Wishing that Marvel again changes his opinion about their composers..

  4. CRM says:

How many different iterations of “Titus Victorius” can we expect?

  5. tiago says:

Strange choice. Michael Giacchino, John Powell, John Debney or even James Horner would fit this movie perfectly.

  6. Justin Boggan says:

David Newman would have been better. That is, if he’s not busy scoring another awful Chipmonks sequel.

  7. Darrell says:

Ha im sorry but how is david newmans name even included in this conversations! this movie is making many different choices like the director and cast and if theres a director that actually has experience with a composer i think its great and will make for great results!!

  8. Employee says:

Wow. lot of people hate tyler eh? lmao

  9. Ciccio says:

At this point I’m resigned to see movie I care about entrusted to incompetent musicians.
