grandmasterNathaniel Mechaly has composed a new score for the international version of the martial arts epic The Grandmaster. The film is directed by Wong Kar-Wai (In the Mood for Love, My Blueberry Nights) and stars Tony Leung Chiu-wai, Zhang Ziyi, Chang Chen, Wang Qingxiang, Zhang Jin, Zhao Benshan and Song Hye-kyo. The movie is a biopic of martial artist Ip Man, who practiced the art of Wing Chun and is best known as the man who taught Bruce Lee. Kar-Wai is producing the Jet Tone Films and Sil-Metropole Organization production with Jacky Pang Yee-wah. Shigeru Umebayashi composed a score for the version that was released in China last month. The new international version scored by Mechaly was shortened by 15 minutes and will premiere at the Berlin Film Festival later this week. Annapurna Pictures has acquired domestic rights for The Grandmaster and is expected to release the film in the US later this year.

Mechaly whose past credits include the Taken films and Colombiana has also composed the score for the TV show Transporter: The Series, which is set to premiere in the US later this year on Cinemax.

    Does this means that the music we’ve heard on the french release is not the score composed by Shigeru Umebayashi but the one composed by Mechaly? That would be a pity, even if the music is really very good…

      I think the score is composed by Ennio Morricone, Stefano Lentini (Stabat Mater), Shigeru Umebayashi and Mechaly! …waiting for the album!!!
