In a recent interview with Danny Elfman at the Grammy Museum’s Clive Davis Theater in downtown Los Angeles, the composer talked about some of his upcoming projects. He revealed that he will be reuniting with director Sam Raimi for the first time since 2004’s Spider-Man 2. Raimi’s next directorial effort is Walt Disney Pictures’ fantasy tentpole Oz: The Great and Powerful. The film is a prequel to The Wizard of Oz that finds the titular character arriving in the Land of Oz and being treated like a wizard by the colorful locals. The movie’s cast includes James Franco, Mila Kunis, Michelle Williams and Rachel Weisz. David Lindsay-Abaire (Robots, Rabbit Hole) is writing the screenplay and Joe Roth (Alice in Wonderland) is producing. Disney has scheduled the film’s release date for March 8, 2013.

Elfman also mentioned that he is potentially scoring the The Hunger Games. The film directed by Gary Ross (Pleasantville, Seabiscuit) is based on the bestselling novel by Suzenne Collins. Jennifer Lawrence stars a young woman selected to represent her district in a televised fight to the death. Also starring in the movie are Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Stanley Tucci, Elizabeth Banks and Woody Harrelson. Nina Jacobson (Diary of a Wimpy Kid, One Day) and Jon Kilik (Babel, Inside Man) are producing. According to Elfman, no deal has been closed yet, but if the assignment is confirmed, expect another update on this page. The Hunger Games is set for a release on March 23, 2012 by Lionsgate.

As previously reported, Elfman also has Shawn Levy’s Real Steel, Gus van Sant’s Restless, Barry Sonnenfeld’s Men In Black III and Tim Burton’s Frankenweenie coming up. As expected, he also will be scoring Burton’s supernatural drama Dark Shadows. The movie is based on the classic ABC TV show, which ran from 1966 to 1971. Johnny Depp plays the vampire Barnabas Collins who is forced to deal with monsters, ghosts and other supernatural creatures. Chloe Moretz, Thomas McDonell, Michelle Pfeiffer, Bella Heathcoate and Eva Green are also starring in the film. Richard D. Zanuck (Big Fish) is among the project’s producers. Warner Bros will be releasing Dark Shadows on May 11, 2012.

  1. It’s nice to see that Elfman’s patched things up with Raimi (remember how he was furious over how “Spider-Man 2” turned out – musically, that is?).
