Fernando Velázquez is reuniting with director Juan Antonio Bayona on the upcoming drama The Impossible. The Spanish/American co-production stars Ewan McGregor and Naomi Watts. The movie is based on a true story and centers on a family caught in mayhem of the tsunami that hit the coast of Thailand in 2004. Velázquez and Bayona previously worked together on the Award-winning 2007 mystery thriller The Orphange, with the composer’s score receiving a lot of attention. Summit Entertainment has picked up domestic rights for the film, which is expected to be released later this year.

Velázquez also has the Swedish/Norwegian thriller Babycall coming out this year. The film is directed by Pål Sletaune and stars Noomi Rapace (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo). The movie centers on woman who is hiding with her young baby after getting out of an abusive relationship. Babycall is expected to premiere in Scandinavia this fall. No word yet on if the movie will be released domestically.

In related news, we have also heard that there are plans to release Velázquez’ score for last year’s M. Night Shyamalan-produced horror thriller Devil, which marked the composer’s first studio feature and has received a lot of positive critical notice. An announcement for the score album should be made in the near future.
