Hans Zimmer’s agency has confirmed his involvement in the upcoming untitled Sherlock Holmes sequel. The assignment doesn’t come as a surprise given the positive reaction to the score for the first part which ended up getting Zimmer his first Oscar nomination in 9 years. The Guy Ritchie-directed movie is currently filming and stars Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law alongside new cast members Stephen Fry, Jared Harris and Noomi Rapace. In the sequel, Sherlock Holmes and his sidekick Dr. Watson join forces to outwit and bring down their fiercest adversary, Professor Moriarty. Warner Bros has set a December 16, 2011 release.

Zimmer has a number of other movies coming out in the next couple of months. Megamind, which Zimmer co-scored with Lorne Balfe opens this Friday. A soundtrack album including almost 30 minutes of score has been released on Lakeshore Records. James L. Brooks’ comedy How Do You Know? starring Owen Wilson and Reese Witherspoon opens this December.
